Scout Day

The weather was great for Scout Day this year. It all started with the traditional Pancake Breakfast then the opening ceremony. Troop 688 offered basketball and we sold grilled cheese, quesadillas and bottle water for sale. There were lots of Packs, Troops and Crews participating and everyone looked like they were enjoying themselves. Special thanks to Pedro for the transportation and Pedro III for all of the work wrapping and selling. Thanks to all of the others who came to help.

Hike

What a great day for a hike. Daniel and Joseph chose the route and checked the map at every point of decision. We had lunch at the Spruce Grove campground, hiked up to Zion peak (too many bees) and took the Upper Winter Creek Trail on the way back to Chantry Flats. The weather was great and there were hikers from all over.

Veterans Relays

Congratulations to Pedro who was presented a gold medal for the softball throw and a silver medal for the long jump. He earned the medals at the Veterans Relays which were held on May 2nd at Don Bosco Tech. Since we left the track meet early in order to work clean up duty at St Gregory's carnival, we were unaware of Pedro's medals. So I'd like to thank Coach Bob Miller and American Legion Post 43 in Hollywood for inviting us to their meeting tonight in order to present Pedro with his medals. See a picture here.

Camping
October 18, 2009
Troop 688 participated in two camping trips this month. The first was the Catholic Retreat which was held at Veteran's Park in Sylmar. Four Scouts and three Scouters from our troop attended. The theme of the retreat was Truth and everyone heard and discussed scripture related to the theme.
The Fall camp-o-ree was held at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. Eight Scouts and two adults attended and we brought home three ribbons. We all had fun and this was Eddie's first campout ever.
Eagle Court of Honor

A fantastic and emotional time was had at Nathan's Eagle Court of Honor today. Guests included many staffers from Forest Lawn Scout Reservation including one who flew in from Texas. The Hahn twins (aka Barney and Baloo) emceed the court and everyone had a great time.
Scouting For Food

Boy Scout Troop 688 and Cub Scout Pack 688 joined forces once again for the annual good turn, Scouting For Food. We started the day with our traditional chorizo and eggs breakfast, donuts and drinks then distributed bags around the neighborhood. Later in the afternoon we collected food from the generous people in our assigned area and delivered it to Neighbors Helping Neighbors to fill their pantry to distribute to the needy. Thanks to all who organized and worked the event!
Hike

It was a great day out hiking on the Skyline trail as three scouts Joseph L., Edgardo G. and Elias P. completed the full ten miles in an approx. 3 hours and 45 minutes. The Adults attending were Dave C., Willie P. and Damian G. A very nice hike before the rain arrives in southern California. Special thanks to Ruben Soto and Pedro Huerta for picking up the hikers at the end.

In keeping with the third point of the Scout Law, Troop 688 has been helping others. We adopted 2 families in Whittier and provided them with the fixings for a complete dinner for Thanksgiving and again for Christmas. We also provided the families with gifts for Christmas. Today, although only one Scout, Daniel, showed up Dave, Damian and Eagle Scout, Nick helped Neighbors Helping Neighbors with their annual lunch and carnival. Many thanks to those who did make it.
