Flag Retirement
April 20,2012
Troop 688 was pleased to honor the request from the John Greenleaf Whittier chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) to host a flag retirement ceremony. We gather at Broadway park in Whittier with two portable fire pits and ceremoniously retired at least 30 flags (I didn't think to count them) of various sizes. We thank the DAR members who made it as well as our own Troop and Crew members and adults that participated.

Camporee
April 21, 2012
Three Scouts and three adults attended the Rio Hondo district spring Camporee. Since we had such a busy weekend scheduled, we attended the Camporee as a day trip. Troop 688 hosted the slingshot event. And our three Scouts participated in the Camporee events earning enough points to place eighth amongst the Troops. We finished in the top three in five events. Great job Joey, Garrett and Andres.
Pancake Breakfast
April 22, 2012
We held our 25th annual pancake breakfast this weekend with a slight twist. This year we added a choice of a pancake breakfast or chorizo & eggs with beans and tortillas. Both were delicious so I wager right now that the chorizo will be back for our 26th annual breakfast. If you were there or were one of our special donors, thanks so much for your support.

Skyline Trail Hike
May 12, 2012
Five Scouts and three adults from Troop 688 participated in the spring Skyline Trail hike hosted by Troop 546. Two friends also joined in the fun. Three of the Scouts completed the 10.5 mile hike while the others had to leave after 5 miles in order to meet other committments. Thanks go out to Mr. Chacon, Mr. Luna, and Mr. Gutierrez for their help.
Summer Camp
August 4, 2012
Congratulations to Joey, Garrett, Andres, Daniel, Alonzo and Marcos on completing 18 merit badges at summer camp last week. The Scouts spent the week at Circle X Ranch at Big Horn. Thanks to Mrs. V for taking the week off of work for our Scouts. Thanks to the staff of Circle X in general and Magic Carp specifically, who was our troop friend for the week.

Backpacking
September 23, 2012
Six Scouts, one Venturer and two Scouters packed up their supplies and headed to Chantry Flats for an overnight backpacking trip. After a quick stop at Sturdevant Falls, we headed up the trail to the Spruce Grove campsite where we ran into another troop from Whittier. The Scouts got to taste mountain spring water from the source as we filtered the water from the creek. After hiking back to Chantry Flats, we stopped at the Pack Station to enjoy some refreshments before heading back home.
Scouting For Food
November 4, 2012
Members of Troop, Pack and Crew 688 joined together and canvassed the neighborhood collecting food for our local food distribution center, Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Thanks to the Pastranos for cooking up the chorizo for breakfast again this year.
